Who it's for

Is IPL right for you?

IPL targets color: the browns of sun damage and the reds of flushing and broken capillaries, problems that creams lighten slowly and peels only reach at the surface. Because the light is tuned to pigment, candidacy depends partly on your skin tone; that's a safety assessment we do carefully at consult, and if IPL isn't the right match for your skin, we'll say so and map what is.

  • Sun spots and freckling: face, chest or hands
  • Redness, flushing and visible small vessels
  • Blotchy, uneven tone that makeup fights daily
  • Georgia-sun damage that built up over years

How IPL works & what to expect

  1. Consult & assess. We map your pigment and redness, confirm IPL suits your skin tone, and set the treatment plan.

  2. Treat. Numbing first, then cool gel and protective eyewear, and pulses across the area; each feels like a warm snap. About 45 minutes.

  3. Clear. Spots darken like coffee grounds over days, then flake away; redness fades more gradually. Skin looks clearer within two weeks.

What to know

IPL risks, downtime & aftercare

Treated spots get darker before they leave: expect a few days of "peppered" skin before the flake. Mild redness and warmth typically settle the same day. The genuine risks (burns or pigment changes) come from treating the wrong skin tone or recently tanned skin at the wrong settings, which is why the assessment (and telling us about recent sun) matters, and why we may tell some patients IPL is not their tool.

IPL for sun damage & brown spots

Decades of sun write themselves into skin as freckling, discrete spots and a general unevenness that gets read as age more than any wrinkle does. IPL is the most direct eraser we have: the light energy is absorbed by the pigment itself, the spot darkens and lifts away, and after a session or three the canvas reads years cleaner. Chest and hands (where sun damage shows and skin care rarely goes) respond as well as the face.

IPL vs BBL and what we actually run

The two names get used interchangeably, but they aren't quite the same thing. IPL (intense pulsed light) is the treatment category. BBL (BroadBand Light) is Sciton's system within that category, and it's the device we run: a BBL on Sciton's Joule platform, with tighter wavelength filtering and integrated cooling than generic IPL units. Ask us for IPL and the machine doing the work is a BBL: same category, sharper tool. We also incorporate Sciton's Forever Young BBL protocol (an anti-aging pass built around collagen stimulation) into every BBL treatment, so that benefit rides along with the pigment and redness work.

IPL for redness & flushing

The same light, tuned differently, targets hemoglobin instead of melanin, collapsing the small surface vessels behind persistent flushing, rosy cheeks and visible capillaries around the nose. Redness fades cumulatively across sessions, and for many rosacea-prone patients IPL becomes the maintenance treatment that keeps flushing quiet, alongside the medical skincare plan we build around it.

Pricing

How pricing works for IPL

IPL is priced per session and per area: a full face differs from face-plus-chest, and a single stubborn spot differs from both. Most pigment goals run one to three sessions. Your plan and its exact price are set at your complimentary consultation, before anything is scheduled.

We also offer several ways to spread treatment costs over time, including buy-now-pay-later plans. Ask about financing at your consultation.

Common questions

IPL FAQs

Is IPL a laser?

No, though the two get grouped together constantly. A laser is a single wavelength of coherent light; our resurfacing device, Halo, is one. IPL is a broad spectrum of light filtered to reach both brown pigment and red vessels in the same session, and that breadth is why it handles mixed sun damage so well.

Does IPL hurt?

Each pulse feels like a warm rubber-band snap: brisk, quick, and over in a half-second. We numb first, and cooling gel plus the handpiece’s chilled tip keep it very manageable; most patients find the anticipation worse than the pulses.

What happens to my spots afterward?

They darken first (a peppered, coffee-ground look for several days), then flake away on their own. That darkening is the treatment working, not a side effect going wrong.

Is IPL safe for my skin tone?

IPL works best on light-to-medium skin tones; on deeper tones the light can’t reliably tell target pigment from surrounding skin, and we won’t treat where that risk exists. The assessment is free, and there are alternatives we’ll map if IPL isn’t your match.

How long do results last, and can spots come back?

The spots IPL clears are gone, but the sun that made them keeps making more. With daily SPF, results hold impressively; most patients book a maintenance session once or twice a year and stay clear.
